AFA Safety Supporting You
Our Master Executive Council (MEC) Safety, Health and Security (SHS) Committee is a requirement under our Contract and has a significant role within our Union. Beyond the support provided directly to your Local Council SHS Committee, our representatives work with regulatory agencies and management to ensure regulatory compliance in striving for the safest workplace for United Flight Attendant.
The Committee’s advocacy for a safe workplace is directly supported by your robust reporting. In addition to our review of the reports you provide, our AFA MEC Safety, Health and Security Committee has defined roles as part of the review committees that are a component of the Inflight Safety Action Program (ISAP) and the Fatigue Risk Management Program (FRMP).
Your MEC Safety Committee also participates with AFA’s larger Air Health and Safety group at the International Office which incorporates other AFA carriers in a monthly round table venue.
While the meetings we’ve described are but a small representation of all the work your MEC Safety Committee takes part of, they by no means capture their commitment to the Membership and the overall goals of our greater Union. Should you wish to understand their role in full, the AFA Constitution and Bylaws is an excellent place to start as a great resource.
Keep Your Airman Certificate Card Current
Flight Attendants are required to keep their FAA Airmen Certificate Card updated with their current name, address, citizenship, and gender. If you move, you should notify the FAA within thirty (30) days of an address change.
Although your FAA Certificate Card is not a required duty item, as Safety Professionals, it is always a good idea to carry it with you. If requested, Flight Attendants must present their Certificate Card to the FAA, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), or other applicable agencies within fifteen (15) days after the date of request for proof of certification.
To update your address or obtain a replacement Airmen Certificate Card:
- Go to www.faa.gov and click on the “Pilots & Airman” tab.
- Once there, locate the “Airmen Certification” link then Flight Attendants & CTO
- Once there, click on the “Replace an Airmen Certificate”
The website contains an address for requesting a replacement by mail, but that process is expected to take anywhere from 4 – 6 weeks, while the online process is expected to take 7-10 days for processing. CWA Human Rights: Town Hall with Ellen Cassedy
The CWA Human Rights Department will be presenting a very special event during this Women’s History Month. On Tuesday, March 21, at 7pm EST, there will be a virtual town hall with Ellen Cassedy, a labor leader of the renowned 9to5 Movement.
The 9to5 Movement was not only the inspiration for the iconic film and song, 9 to 5, but it is a testament to the fact that anyone can organize—and win.

Contact Your Local AFA Union Representatives First!
When Flight Attendants have contractual or legality questions, always contact the AFA Local Council Representatives first.
While the company’s “Concierge Desk” (i.e., Duty Desk) may be helpful in some situations, those staffing the desks are company representatives who are not always trained in the application of the language of our Contract and, perhaps unintendedly, may not always convey accurate information.
Despite our good intentions to render assistance and provide immediate answers to our flying partners, Flight Attendants are strongly encouraged to refrain from responding to or posting contractual issues/questions on social media. The only way a Flight Attendant can guarantee they are obtaining a factually accurate response to any Contract issue is by utilizing the knowledge and training of their Local Representatives who are versed in our Contract.
