Reprint of September 4, 2002 Union Coalition Letter to Mr. Tilton:

Dear Mr. Tilton:

As the duly-elected leaders of all of the organized employees of United Airlines, we welcome you to our Company and thank you for meeting with us today. We greatly appreciated your thoughtful comments.

The employees of this airline are anxious to achieve an out-of-court recovery, and we give you our commitment that we are ready to work with you in order to accomplish that result. We are interested in practical solutions designed to address the difficult situation in which we find ourselves. Those solutions should, in our view, be sufficient to give the Company access to the capital markets, either with or without an ATSB loan guarantee, thereby stabilizing the Company and giving it the time to address the many other difficult issues confronting it.

In that regard, we are all depending on you to provide new and dynamic leadership here at United, and to champion a business plan, both short and long-term, which all of the employees can support and which will enable our Company to resume its rightful place as the world’s airline of choice.

Thank you again for your willingness to join our Company in these challenging times. We hope to be able to provide you with our view of what a recovery plan should entail as soon as possible.

Very truly yours,
