Health Precautions – Support on the Ground

Date: October 8, 2014
Type: AFA Article

A heightened awareness is the best way to implement health precautions. Please continue to remain vigilant and monitor passengers before and during boarding, looking for symptoms of Ebola.  If you encounter a passenger who is exhibiting symptoms that cause you to be concerned be sure to use the resources that are available to assist you in validating your concerns.

While you are on the ground contact MedAire at 877-307-7249 (Domestic) or 480-333-3995 (International) and be prepared to provide the following information to assist with an objective evaluation of the passenger:

  1. Passenger Temperature
  2. Countries visited in the past month
  3. Other symptoms

If these symptoms are not obvious on the ground and you are faced with an ill passenger in the air, have the pilots contact MedLink via Dispatch.  As we know once an infected person is inflight our options are limited.  It is imperative that efforts be increased prior to boarding to ensure that those who may be experiencing Ebola-like symptoms remain grounded.

Our AFA MEC Safety, Health and Security Committee along with United Inflight and Medical, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other World Health Organizations, are continuing to monitor all health situations in our workplace including concerns on Ebola.  AFA International will also continue working with various health and governmental agencies regarding heightened screening of airline passengers.

We will continue to provide updates on Ebola as needed. For more information about Ebola and associated symptoms, please visit our Ebola Updates page located on in the Flight Attendant Alert Center on our website.  We have also created a Just the Facts on Ebola fact sheet that provides you with an immediate action reference. This fact sheet is available to download on our website.
