Japan Update #7 - March 23

Date: March 23, 2011

Today media reported advisories regarding drinking tap water in the Tokyo areas in regards for infant consumption.  The Japanese Health Ministry said in a statement that it was unlikely that there would be negative consequences to infants who did drink the water, but as a precaution it should be avoided if possible and not used to make infant formula.  The warning applies to the 23 wards of Tokyo, as well as the towns of Mitaka, Tama, Musashino, Machida and Inagi to the west of the city.

Additionally, in our conversations with United today regarding the safety of the drinking water for our Members based in and on layover in NRT, United informed us that "Testing conducted by the Tokyo Waterworks Bureau indicates that the water remains safe for adults to consume.  Testing by the City of Tokyo of the NRT potable water supply indicates iodine levels remain well within safe margins."

We have confirmed with United that there are adequate supplies of bottled water at the layover hotel available for use by Flight Attendants and the supply is checked frequently to insure ample stock.

Repairs continue at the Fukushima nuclear facility and authorities believe the situation is stabilizing, but caution that repair work could last for many days or even weeks before full control of the reactors is restored. Other than the recent water test results at its Kanamachi Purification Plant (that exceeded the health limits for infants but, within the legal limits for children and adults), no harmful radiation readings have been reported anywhere outside the 50 mile exclusion zone surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan since the crisis began.
