Questions on Voluntary Supplemental Benefits Coverage

Date: June 19, 2020
Type: AFA Article

Over the course of the past couple of months, vendors providing supplemental insurance benefits have been responding to a changing market place where many of the changes have been brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many of you have been sending those question to the United MEC Benefits Committee asking for specific information about premium payments – how to make them and how missed payments as a result of Special COLA are processed and portability of benefits after retirement.

Our MEC Benefits Committee, already inundated with questions about the company’s VSP2 offering and how that ties into our contractual benefits, have done their level best to provide direction and assistance.  However, with increasing frequency there appears to be a growing expectation that these volunteers should be more familiar with the individual benefits each of us may have individually elected through the various supplemental benefit brokers.

In order to avoid frustration, keep in mind that voluntary supplemental benefits are very individual.  AFA does not have visibility into these plans nor are our representatives licensed to sell or service these insurance products.  We want you to get the information you need - quickly and efficiently.  At the same time, we are working to remove this line of work from the Local Council Offices and volunteers.

Having said this, we are putting together a list of telephone resources to assist you in reaching out to these representatives to obtain the information you may need.
